From our Associate Pastor Spiritual Disciplines Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness. 1 Timothy 4:7 ESV While rereading the classic book, Spiritual Disciplines For The Christian Life, written by Donald S. Whitney, I was reminded of the importance of spiritual discipline. This is an excellent book I recommend to all who desire to cultivate spiritual disciplines within their life for the purpose of godliness. Like any discipline, whether for the body or for the academic classroom, there must be hard work in order to cultivate discipline resulting in some form of growth. As Christians we are called to work out hard spiritually so that we grow spiritual muscles. In other words, we work out hard spiritually to grow in our faith in Christ or put another way so that we grow more and more into the image of Christ! We do this through reading God s Word, meditating on God s Word, memorizing God s Word, praying God s Word, walking in the Spirit, serving others and worshiping God. While reading this book I was reminded of the importance of worship. In fact this is a spiritual discipline that is forgotten or ignored all together. We all worship someone or something. We were created to worship God. However, as sinners we worship ourselves, other people, careers, hobbies, our children, anything. Yet as Christians we are commanded to worship God! (Exodus 20:1-11) In fact we are told to worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4: 23-24) Worship is not something we confine to Sunday. We are to worship God throughout the week, throughout each day. Dr. Whitney writes, We can t expect worship to flow from our lips on the Lord s Day if we keep it damned in our hearts throughout the week (115). Worship really is a spiritual discipline. May we all see the necessity to worship our God each and every day resulting in spiritual growth but also beautiful worship on the Lord s day! So, find your quiet place and worship God each day. From Our Music Director JULY 2019 With summer in full gear, we have had only one Sunday evening service to sing our song of the month from June. So, we will take June s song and carry it over into July s song of the month. In case anyone can t remember the song we selected, it is All I Have Is Christ by Jordan Kauflin. During our VBS, it became quite apparent that we have some great youth singers. Listening to you practice each night during VBS caused me to wonder why you have not joined the choir. Our choir is open to the youth who are church members. Please consider joining the choir, or even playing an instrument. Thank you for allowing me to serve in the music with you. Jim Isaiah 12:2 Women s Bible Study and Child Care Plans are in the works to offer a weekday Women s Bible Study later this year. Kyung Scaife will lead this study. Watch for additional information to be forthcoming. An important need associated with such a class is child care. We are looking for two ladies who would be willing to offer two hours per week to provide the care so the mothers can attend class. A small stipend will be given to the child care workers and a background check is required. Thank You! I would like to Thank everyone for all the prayers for my son Caleb Filomina, (Leah Calvert s grandson). In March he was very sick and in the hospital. The Lord has blessed him with a full recovery. Again Thank you so much! Debra Filomina Thank you. Pastor Jack
July 2019 LIVING AS A DISCIPLE OF JESUS Dwelt with Christ s Word As Christ s disciples, we are to be aware and in control of what is dwelling in us. By the grace of God, all believers have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19; Romans 8:9, 11). This is a source of comfort, security, and encouragement. The result of the Holy Spirit s indwelling is that we function as a holy temple of the Lord living for His glory and purposes (1 Corinthians 6:20). Additionally, as believers we must be on guard that sin still seeks to make its home in us (Romans 7:17-20). However, we are commanded, and given the privilege to have the words of Christ dwell in us richly. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. [NASB Colossians 3:16] To dwell means to live in, to reside in. What do we allow to dwell in us richly? For some it could be pornography or another form of sexual immorality; for others current news or financial projections and reports; for some it may be their children s sports or a favorite team s scores or stats; for another music, movies or video games, or perhaps fashion trends; for others it could be legalism and self-righteousness; and for some guilt, shame, or vengeance. Having Christ s word dwelling/residing richly means that biblical teaching is at home in him. It does not come only occasionally for a visit. Rather it has taken up its abode in him (Jay Adams). How do we get Christ s Word into us richly? By reading it (Deuteronomy 17:19; Romans 15:4; Revelation 1:3); hearing it (Romans 10:17; 2 Timothy 3:15); studying it (2 Timothy 2:15; Acts 17:11); and meditating upon it (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2; 119:97, 99). We must give priority and time to these four disciplines so the Word of God may dwell in us richly/abundantly. When Christ s word is dwelling in us richly, we will apply what we learn and it will flow from us (Matthew 7:24; Luke 11:28). We will be teaching it to our family and those near us (Deuteronomy 11:18-20; Luke 6:45). We will have our prayers answered (John 15:7-8) and produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit (John 15:8; Galatians 5:22-23). We will be overcoming temptation and avoiding sin (Psalm 119:11; John 8:31-32). Whatever dwells in us governs our thoughts, behavior, and words; which then produces results and consequences (good or bad). In Colossians 3:15, Paul tells us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts and be thankful. A means to the peace of Christ ruling in our hearts is having the word of Christ dwelling in us richly. Through the power of His grace and the indwelling Holy Spirit, may the words of Christ and the peace of Christ dwell in us richly (Jeremiah 15:16). Tom Scaife Are you facing struggles and need help to get God s word dwelling in you in the context of your life?
